Mary Elizabeth Reynolds Clarke diaries and photographs 1850-1908.

Consists of diaries (52 v.), notebooks about art, reports of sermons, accounts, and photographs that document the life of teacher and homemaker Mary Elizabeth Reynolds Clarke. The diaries chronicle Clarke's teacher training at a Charlestown (Boston, Mass.), seminary in 1851 and various teaching jobs she held in R.I., Conn., and Ky. between 1851 and 1858. Information for and about the art classes that Clarke taught outside of a school was kept throughout the diaries. The diaries also served as a place to keep recipes; lists of clothing, calls made and received, and correspondence; notes about entertainments given; cash accounts; lace and knitting patterns; contributions to Bible class; and contributors to the Brown University Women's College. Clarke wrote about her courtship with and marriage to Benjamin Franklin Clarke; her daughter, Martha; and travel. Visits to the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876 and the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893 are noted. Vacations in Me., Vt. N.H., R.I., and N.Y.; and Canada, including N.S. and Quebec are described in separate vacation diaries. There are separate diaries for trips to Europe (1881-1882) and Europe and the Middle East (1897-1898). Diaries for the first European trip (5 v.) include descriptions of Great Britain, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, and Italy. The diaries from the second trip to Europe and the Middle East (4 v.) describe travel through Ireland, the Jersey Islands, France, Italy, Egypt, Germany, and Norway. All of the Europe and Middle East travel diaries have photographs, prints and ephemera glued in or inserted throughout. Notes created by Clarke's granddaughter, Mary Frances Williams, are inserted in a number of the volumes.
